Begin Criticizes Unrealistic Peace Offer to Nasser

A summation of a speech Begin gave at the Knesset about Nasser’s intentions toward Israel and the government’s reading of his intentions. The government is sending conflicting messages about Nasser, sometimes saying that he is an Egyptian Hitler and sometimes saying that he could be a possible peace partner. It is the duty of Foreign Minister Golda Meir to expose Nasser at the UN. At the UN Nasser demanded that Israel go back to the situation that existed before 1917, meaning the destruction of Israel and the removal or extermination for the vast majority of its Jews. Nasser then demanded that both Israel and Jordan be incorporated into a larger pan-Arab republic. Israel has a duty to tell its citizens the truth about the situation in the Middle East and how conditions are changing.

Begin Calls for Ben Gurion’s Resignation

Begin addresses the Herut Council about his disapproval of both the UN’s viewpoint on the Siniai campaign the Government’s response. He argues that Israel will commit suicide if it obeys UN’s orders to retreat. Begin strongly believes that if Israel retreats, Egyptian soldiers will enter El Arish. When that happens, Begin calls for David Ben-Gurion to resign. Begin explains what happened after the Government panicked. He envisions what an ideal relationship would be with the U.S. and concludes by thanking France for its friendship.

No Further Reatreat Until Egypt Makes Peace

The Jewish Herald shares an interview with Begin which focuses on the conversation of Israel withdrawing from Gaza and Sinai Peninsula. Begin argues that the land belongs to Israel and there should be no retreat until there is a peace agreement with Egypt.

Stop the Retreat Before January 10th’ Begin Urges

Begin addresses the Knesset regarding the claim that the Prime Minister told the military correspondent of the ‘New York Times’ that Israel would agree to give Gaza over to a High Commissioner chosen by the UN. This counters what the Government had previously said in front of the world. The Government had said that Israel will never agree to a foreign power occupying any liberated part of Land of Israel. Begin demands the Knesset to stop any retreat before January 10.

How Far are We Going to Retreat?

Begin writes about the controversy over who should control the Suez Canal area. He argues that David Ben-Gurion made a major mistake when overnight changing Israel’s position, meaning that Israel would retreat. Unlike Britain and France, Israel will be threatened by Nasser if Egypt gets control of the Suez Canal region. In regards to the idea of the UNO police force be stationed there, Begin argues that the land will end up in Nasser’s hands. If Egypt returns to the Suez Canal, Begin is confident that they will rebuild their army. Additionally, should Israel retreat from Suez Canal area, it will invite the international world to demand Israel to also retreat from the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza, and eventually, Jerusalem.
