Israel Has Risen

A call to all Israelis, especially the Israeli youth, at the occasion of the founding of the State. The rule of the British in Palestine is over and the State of Israel has risen in its place. It could not come about without trials of blood, sweat, and tears. Even before the institutions for the State have been set up it has come under attack. To fight this threat Israel needs weapons, spirit, and brains. Israel will need to pursue a foreign policy of reciprocity and friendship with all nations that recognize it. Inside Israel all must enjoy freedom and security, even non-Jews. Now that there is a Jewish State there is no need for an underground any longer. However, if the government becomes tyrannical a new underground may arise. The Hebrew youth have fought heroically with the spirit of the ancient and modern Jewish heroes like the Maccabees and Joseph Trumpeldor. They will go forth to victory, ensuring that the entire Jewish homeland is free.

Conversation Between the Charirman of the UNSCOP and Menachem Begin

A secret meeting between representatives of UNSCOP and Begin in August, 1947. They discuss what the Irgun is, its political philosophy, and its responses to various proposed compromises. Begin is adamant that the Jews have the right to control all the land and must do so. The Jewish refugees must be repatriated in Palestine. The British are the problem, both in direct illegal actions like military courts and in stirring up Arab opinion against the Jews.

Text of Record for Broadcast to the American People

A call to the American people during the revolt against the British in 1947. The British were given a mandate to prepare the land to be a homeland for the Jewish people but has spent thirty years cheating the Jews out of their homeland instead. The Etzel has long recognized the true aim of the British and vows not to stop fighting until the British are kicked out of the country. Americans can help by pressuring the US government to not let Britain get away with its crimes in Palestine, by boycotting British goods, by sending more ships to transport Jewish refugees to Palestine, and by donating money and goods to the fighters so they can have as much supplies and weapons as necessary. The Jewish people is determined to win its freedom, and has many Dov Gruners willing to fight and die for that freedom. The Jewish nation calls to America for help in attaining its freedom.

The Fight for Liberation and Nationhood

A call to action during the revolt against the British in 1947. The Etzel is revolting in order to bring justice and freedom to Eretz Israel. World War Two had cut the fighters of Eretz Israel off from the world and from the Jews of Europe. Without ‘British perfidy’ the slaughtered millions of Europe could have been saved by being brought to Palestine. The Etzel carried out dozens of attacks and built its arsenal by taking weapons from the British. Now that World War Two is over the Jews mourn their six million dead and resent that their homeland is still closed to the survivors. Now even the ‘appeasers’ who criticized the Etzel in the past are united against the rule of Britain. Britain itself has a massive, modern army in Palestine to suppress the revolt. Begin ends by pleading for help in manpower, supplies, and money to better carry out the revolt.

Of politics and law

After both the Government and the Knesset take stands against withdrawing from any territory without a peace agreement, making it the lawful duty of the Government to exercise the will of the Knesset in this matter, the Government agrees in principle, if not in practice to withdraw from the Suez Canal after negotiations with the USA over the reopening of the Canal. In return the USA promises not to pressure Israel to make further territorial concessions. Begin says that this is a betrayal of public trust and a violation of articles 3 and 15 of the Basic Laws: the Government. He also calls it a violation of the Knesset’s confidence in the Government. Begin considers the discussion with the Americans on the subject, after four years of steadfastly holding the position of not one millimeter of withdrawal without a peace treaty, to be detrimental to Israel because concessions, regardless of promises to the contrary, are sure to lead to more concessions.
