No Less Than the West… Israel Has Every Right to Develop A-Power

Begin focuses on why Israel should have atomic power. Even having one bomb is on a different level than other “conventional” weapons. There is a fear that other nations with atomic powers would use “small” atomic bombs in a war, along with the “conventional” weapons. Begin focuses on Israel becoming closer to manufacturing atomic weapons. Begin argues that there is a huge ratio difference between forces of Israel’s enemy and Israel. Therefore, the purpose of having atomic power is to make sure enemies won’t destroy Israel. He says that Israelis are living in perpetual distress, which is not why Israel was established. Strengthening Israel’s security will allow the Government to reclaim the slogans of “aliyah, economic independence, work, purity of actions, settlement, peace.”

We Should Hold the Parade in Jerusalem

Begin argues against Levi Eshkol’s decision for not having an army parade on Israel’s Independence Day in Israel’s capital, Jerusalem. Begin says that one of the Eshkol’s reasons is because in the past, the parades in Jerusalem were insignificant, which did not raise morale of the army or Jerusalemites. Begin accuses the Government of simply unwilling to organize a powerful parade in Jerusalem. Another reason of Eshkol’s for not having an army parade in Jerusalem is because it would breach the Armistice Agreement with Jordan. It is extremely troubling to Begin that Eshkol even mentions Israel’s capabilities to break the Agreement because Jordan has already broken the Agreement. Begin goes even further to say that all of the Armistice Agreements have been broken by the Arab nations. In the conclusion, Begin writes that because of Eshkol’s mistakes, the Israeli public will either think that if the parade is in Jerusalem, it will be lacking morale or breaching the Agreement.

It is Not a Matter of Protocol but of Heart and Mind

Begin delivers a speech at a mass meeting in Tel Aviv to protest the arrival of the first German Ambassador to Israel, Dr. Rolf Pauls. Throughout the speech he weaves together the history of Nazism, Dr. Pauls’ past connection with Nazism, and the loss of 6 million Jews. Begin expresses frustration that the tens of millions of Germans who supported Hitler are still residing in Germany and Dr. Pauls comes to Israel representing them. Begin shifts to speak about his disapproval of Levi Eshkol’s kind words to the German people. Begin also expresses his frustration regarding the German Chancellor’s words regarding Israel-Germany relations. Begin then acknowledges that not only members of Herut are present at the demonstration, and that this is a forum for all of Israel. He closes telling the audience to walk together in silence in memory of the Jews who perished in the Holocaust.

He Set Us Upon the Path of Freedom

Begin reflects on the greatness of Ze’ev Jabotinsky. He shares how Jabotinsky mastered and beautified Hebrew. Begin provides examples through history that led people to see Jabotinsky as a statesman and orator. Also, Jabotinsky understood the necessity for a Jewish State long before other Zionist leaders. Additionally, Begin mentions that Jabotinsky knew that for survival, there must be a Jewish Army. He concludes that the nation owes Jabotinsky gratitude for his successful vision of the State.

Bourguiba’s ‘Peaceplan’ is Aimed to Liquidate Israel

Begin first shares both Nasser’s and Habib Bourguiba’s strategies for destroying Israel. Nasser’s plan is with rocket missiles and Bourguiba’s plan is through a disguised “peaceplan.” , Begin explains that Bourguiba takes an anti-war stance because he does not think Arabs are strong enough to win a war against Israel, therefore, his strategy is to make Israel vulnerable in stages. Begin shares that Nasser strongly opposed Bourguiba’s “peaceplan.” Additionally, Nasser protested against the proposal for improved relations between Israel and Germany. Then Begin argues that the Government is dangerously partaking in “automatic thinking” in which if Nasser, an enemy of Israel, disagrees with something, then it must be good for Israel. Begin argues that the Government’s thought process is especially hazardous because the world is listening to Israel’s reactions. He concludes that Israel is enslaved mentally, and the country must redeem itself.
