Menachem Begin’s Case Against Military Rule

Begin addresses the Knesset and argues that Israel should no longer have a Military Government. He provides examples to show that this type of Government is not protecting the country. Begin argues that ending Military rule will not threaten Israel’s security. Begin concludes by proposing that “no single right granted to any civilian or military authority be abrogated until the Knesset adopts an all-embracing law to safeguard the security of the State.”

Let Us Not Lose Our Heads – Don’t Retreat

Begin delivers a speech in Tel Aviv in regards to opposing the Government’s decision to withdraw forces from the Sinai Peninsula. He explains Herut’s four strategic principles: (1) do not wait until the enemy is ready; (2) right makes might; (3) liberate and remain; (4) grasp the opportune moment. Begin demands the Government to retreat their retreat.

Israel’s Last Chance

Begin shares his concern for Israel’s security as a result of decisions made over the years by the Government. The Government missed countless opportunities to strengthen Israel. Begin then argues that Israelis are delusional if they think war is preventable. This is because Israel’s enemies are determined to destroy Israel. To feel strong, Begin remarks that Israel needs to feel worldwide Jewry standing with Israel against its enemies. He then shifts to share that there is a shift in public opinion in Israel and if a war does not break out, Herut will encourage Israelis to demand new elections.

The Point of No Return

Begin notes the dangers that face Israel with regards to national security. He states the need for aircraft and that Israel may soon face a miracle

Ben Gurion’s Tragedy

Begin criticizes the government, specifically Ben-Gurion and Moshe Sharet, for being a “government that does not know what to do, nor how to express itself” at a time in which an anti-Israel agenda has been existing in many countries including Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Italy, and the Soviet Union. He attacks Ben Gurion for his threat to the British by uttering the words “destruction of Israel” while he is the “man responsible for their security.”
